When Jenifer Dick submitted her design for a modern quilt to a magazine and heard back the next day, she knew she was part of a hot trend.
“Haven,” a 60 x 72 inch quilt in solid colors, is featured in the March/April issue of McCall’s Quilting. The colorful lap quilt also appears on the cover with more traditional offerings.
Jenifer, a Kansas City Star Quilts author, says “Haven” may be modern, but it is based on an old Amish pattern. Her latest book, the well reviewed Quilt Retro: 11 Designs to Make Your Own, also features modern designs. The book is available at www.pickledishstore.com.
Magazine readers should expect to see more patterns for modern quilts, which are especially popular with beginning quilters, and more solid colors, Jenifer says.
“It’s all solids now,” she says. “Solids are hot, and all the magazines are looking for quilts with solids. All the traditional magazines are getting their toes wet with modern designs.”
Her work also appears in the premiere issue of Modern Quilts Unlimited. So, does Jenifer consider herself a modern quilter?
The quilt featured in McCall’s Quilting gave Jenifer the chance to work again with Angela Walters, who machine quilted “Haven” and several of the quilts in Jenifer’s books. Angela’s Web site is www.quiltingismytherapy.com.
The skill level for “Haven” is confident beginner. How confident a beginner does one have to be to make this quilt?
“You know your sewing machine,” she says. “It’s not your first quilt. You’ve maybe made one or two quilts.”
“I was an over-confident beginner,” she says with a laugh.
That was because she was a natural.
“I took to it really easily,’’ she says. “When you’re passionate about something, nothing stops you.”
